Since we implemente step counting on mooveTeam APP there several users asking on how does it work. On this post we explain how we use the technology and why some users report differences between mooveTeam and other fitness devices and Apps.
Both iOS and Android devices count steps, but we show meters on the counters. For iOS devices we use the hardware from the devices but on Android it depends on each model. Some are just hardware, some just software and some a mixed between.
For devices with pedometer, we use it (the most accurate system); the ones without, we use accelerometer (less accurate but available in all devices). There are other options using Google Fit API_, but this means the user needs to have it installed with an account and opened… this is still and option for the future but so far just a pain point.
Some users asked what is the best way to hold the phone, hand or pocket? Specially for the ones using accelerometer it is better to have it on the pocket isnce is better to detect the movement. If hold on your hand your arms should run on “standard walking movement”… if hold like a “waiter” the device can’t recognize the movement, so no steps…
It is also important to know that for devices without pedometer the APP doesn’t count if at background.
